Week 7 (Last Week)
Monday, 15th August (Brazilian Night)
The Brazil Project
Their music is a blend of
traditional, contemporary, and original Brazilian jazz. Samba and bossa nova
rhythms, the excitement of carnival, sensuous songs in Portuguese and English,
fiery percussion, and top-flight jazz and Latin improvisations.
Nation Beat
Inspired by the Afro-Brazilian
rhythms of maracatu, the foremost diasporic band of the Mangue Bit movement of
Northeast Brazil, Nation Beat has created an incredible, fresh new sound. Which
nation, and which beat? What makes this group special is that it offers no
simple answers. They are rhythm gatherers, harvesting the fruit of 500 years of
cultural cross-breeding, which is why the sounds of the northeast of Brazil and
the southern United States blend together so seamlessly; NPR music writer
Banning Eyre calls them "the most original and alluring fusion group I
have heard in years." In 2005, Nation Beat became the first North American
group to collaborate and record with an authentic maracatu "nation,"
the legendary Estrela Brilhante of Recife led by Mestre Walter and rhythm
master Jorge Martins.
Tuesday, 16th August
Gary Farmer and The Trouble Makers
Gary Farmer, a long time actor
appearing on both stage and screen for thirty-five years is the driving force
behind Troublemaker's entertaining style of contemporary and traditional blues
music. The Troublemakers started out by
playing the music that influenced them-- John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon, Muddy
Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Freddie King while also playing the contemporary blues
of Keb Mo, Dr. John, Taj Mahal and Robben Ford until they started developing our own blues music. Farmer,
a harmonica player and vocalist fronts the four to six piece band rounded out
by lead guitar, rhythm guitar, sax, piano, drums and bass with lead and backup
vocals. Gary Farmer and The Trouble Makers
Native Roots
Native Roots was formed in 1997 by
musician John L. Williams (Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux) and lyricist/vocalist
Emmett "Shkeme" Garcia (Santa Ana Pueblo) to reach out with a message
of pride, unity, and respect among all nations, through the universal language
of music. This dynamic and award winning combination has produced three CD's
that have propelled Native Roots into the Native American and Reggae music
scene as the premier Native American Reggae band whose music is 100% Native
American written, produced, and performed. Native Roots contributes their solid
reggae foundation to the influence it has had on Native American communities.
Native Roots is a natural extension of growing up, living and loving reggae
music. John Williams' extensive musical background in working with different
styles of music has allowed him to incorporate various elements into the music
without compromising the essential reggae feel.
In addition, "Shkeme's" singing style reflects not only a
variety of reggae styles, but also relects years of experience singing both
traditional pueblo and pow wow music. The blending Native influences such as
traditional drums, rattles, chants, language and flute, with a variety of reggae
styles including ragamuffin, one drop, rockers, and dancehall, makes Native
Roots music unique.

closest too alternative Country with hints of Americana and Rock.
Stephanie Hatfield and Hot Mess
Stephanie Hatfield invites us into
her life by shoving us head first into the back seat of a speeding car that is
her music with Hot Mess. A vessel of unfeigned guitars, vocals, and madness

Guitar Shorty
Guitar Shorty is well known for
his explosive guitar style and wild stage antics. Billboard magazine said, “his
galvanizing guitar work defines modern, top-of-the-line blues-rock. His vocals
remain as forceful as ever. Righteous shuffles...blistering, sinuous guitar
solos.”Shorty was born in Houston but grew up mainly in Kissimmee, Florida where
he began playing the guitar at an early age and began leading a band not long
after. During his time in Tampa Bay, Florida, at age 16 he received his
nickname, Guitar Shorty, when it mysteriously showed up on the marquee of the
club he was playing as 'The Walter Johnson Band featuring Guitar Shorty. He
steadily began to garner accloades from his peers and, soon after, he joined
the Ray Charles Band for a year. He recorded his first single in 1957,
"You Don't Treat Me Right", for the Cobra label under the direction
of Willie Dixon after Dixon saw him playing with the Walter Johnson Orchestra.
Eventually, he joined Guitar Slim's band and move to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Week 5
Monday, 31st July
Jennifer Peterson & Creekstone
Jennifer Peterson & Creekstone
is a vibrant trio from Taos, New Mexico whose music can best be described as
Americana with influences of blues, bluegrass, pop and country. Jennifer Peterson & Creekstone
Bill Hearne’s Roundhouse Revue
Legally blind since birth, Bill
took up the guitar when he was seven.
Largely musically self-taught, Bill developed a picking style he calls
cross-picking. "Since I didn't have
people to play with, I developed a style that incorporated a percussion rhythm
while playing lead riffs. Basically, I tried to be a one man band," he
says. Like fellow cross-pickers Tony
Rice and Doc Watson, Bill is improvisational.
"I hardly ever play the same thing twice." It's not something he thinks about, it simply
happens, he adds. And what always happens when Bill lets it happen is just
plain fun. Dallas born Hearne finds his way into a song's interior with a
baritone as mellow as bourbon and smoky as a Texas pool hall and a picking
style that satisfies both your feet and heart.
At its best, country music is elegiac, a meat and potatoes campfire poem
about heartbreak and redemption. It's
about truth, the kind that hurts and the kind that heals Bill Hearne’s Roundhouse Revue
Tuesday, 1st August
Joe West and Friends
Joe West has won the Santa Fe Reporter’s “Best Song Writer of
2008, 2009, and 2010". It seems that his strange folk/country tales of
U.F.O.s, broken hearts and trailer park liberals enthrall audiences wherever he
hangs his hat.
Paula Nelson Band
Paula Nelson was born on October
27th, 1969 in Houston TX. With her father being great musician Willie Nelson, she was born into a family of music and entertainment, she
started playing piano and singing at the age of seven. She drew early
influences from singers like Jesse Colter and Rita Coolidge, whose bluesy,
supple vocal style provided one of Paula’s earliest templates as she found her
own voice. Texas Monthly has called that voice “torchy,” and the Los Angeles Times
praised, “There’s no missing the unforced power of Paula’s singing.”
Wednesday, 2nd August

Perry Watts-Russell to Capitol Records/ EMI. Rolling Stone Magazine gave her

which appeared on the ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ soundtrack. Her song “Pale Moon”
from was picked up by Putamayo Records as the first track on their American

innate earthy-end-of-the-world-defiance took on a weight and pathos which
ultimately defined the mood and message of her 2005 release ‘Geronimo’ on Back
Porch Records (EMI). Produced by Charlie
Sexton, the record got a lot of strong support at AAA radio and on Satelite
Radio. McNally toured extensively behind it from 2005-2007, doing national
tours with a band and as a solo performer. Unable to return to New Orleans
after Hurricane Katrina Shannon settled into North Mississippi with her husband
and daughter. Her newest project is called ‘Coldwater’. It was recorded with
Jim Dickinson at his Zebra Ranch Studio just before his passing. The record
features Shannon’s regular touring band called Hot Sauce; they are Jake Fussell,
Eric Deaton and Wallace Lester. McNally has toured and done shows with Willie
Nelson, Stevie Nicks, John Mellencamp, Charlie Sexton, Son Volt, Ryan Adams,

and esoteric lyrics.

known for their unique sound, which inspired by deep funk, the pulse of
afro-Latin rhythms, and the aural kinesthetics of rock 'n' Roll, can be

Week 3 (The Must See Week) Monday, 18th July Wagogo From Memphis to Mozambique to Mexico, Wagogo is an Albuquerque based reggae and world beats band featuring songs in Shona played on authentic instruments, with some modern roots. The band memebers are an ecclectic group of musicians that make a rhythmic cocktail out of their Chicano influences, Northern Mexico folk songs, warm calypso island grooves, and the captivating spirit music of Zimbabwe. Their lyrics possess an equally enriching quality, being composed mostly by lead singer Armando Ortega, in a blend of Spanish, English, and the Shona language of Zimbabwe. With such a diverse repertoire, Wagogo inspires a multigenerational crowd to dance and sing with its dedication to preserving the traditional roots of music, in addition to exploring new sounds. Embodying the sounds of her native land, her music crackles with Rasta rhythms and rapping. Jay Trachtenberg from Record Reviews has this to say about her: “In a genre so often awash in a tidal wave of testosterone, it's always refreshing to hear from a woman, and no female reggae artist has more to say or the ability to say it more convincingly than Sister Carol. Also known as Mother Culture, the Brooklyn-based DJ/singer is back with another thoroughly conscious set of roots music that sparkles with witty verbosity and an acute sense of social reality.” Tuesday, 19th JulyPat Malone Trio Exciting fresh new jazz featuring archtop and acoustic guitars played with soul and virtuosity.
