Week 7 (Last Week)

Monday, 15th August (Brazilian Night)

The Brazil Project

Their music is a blend of traditional, contemporary, and original Brazilian jazz. Samba and bossa nova rhythms, the excitement of carnival, sensuous songs in Portuguese and English, fiery percussion, and top-flight jazz and Latin improvisations.

Nation Beat

Inspired by the Afro-Brazilian rhythms of maracatu, the foremost diasporic band of the Mangue Bit movement of Northeast Brazil, Nation Beat has created an incredible, fresh new sound. Which nation, and which beat? What makes this group special is that it offers no simple answers. They are rhythm gatherers, harvesting the fruit of 500 years of cultural cross-breeding, which is why the sounds of the northeast of Brazil and the southern United States blend together so seamlessly; NPR music writer Banning Eyre calls them "the most original and alluring fusion group I have heard in years." In 2005, Nation Beat became the first North American group to collaborate and record with an authentic maracatu "nation," the legendary Estrela Brilhante of Recife led by Mestre Walter and rhythm master Jorge Martins.

Native Roots

Native Roots was formed in 1997 by musician John L. Williams (Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux) and lyricist/vocalist Emmett "Shkeme" Garcia (Santa Ana Pueblo) to reach out with a message of pride, unity, and respect among all nations, through the universal language of music. This dynamic and award winning combination has produced three CD's that have propelled Native Roots into the Native American and Reggae music scene as the premier Native American Reggae band whose music is 100% Native American written, produced, and performed. Native Roots contributes their solid reggae foundation to the influence it has had on Native American communities. Native Roots is a natural extension of growing up, living and loving reggae music. John Williams' extensive musical background in working with different styles of music has allowed him to incorporate various elements into the music without compromising the essential reggae feel.  In addition, "Shkeme's" singing style reflects not only a variety of reggae styles, but also relects years of experience singing both traditional pueblo and pow wow music. The blending Native influences such as traditional drums, rattles, chants, language and flute, with a variety of reggae styles including ragamuffin, one drop, rockers, and dancehall, makes Native Roots music unique.

Guitar Shorty

Guitar Shorty is well known for his explosive guitar style and wild stage antics. Billboard magazine said, “his galvanizing guitar work defines modern, top-of-the-line blues-rock. His vocals remain as forceful as ever. Righteous shuffles...blistering, sinuous guitar solos.”Shorty was born in Houston but grew up mainly in Kissimmee, Florida where he began playing the guitar at an early age and began leading a band not long after. During his time in Tampa Bay, Florida, at age 16 he received his nickname, Guitar Shorty, when it mysteriously showed up on the marquee of the club he was playing as 'The Walter Johnson Band featuring Guitar Shorty. He steadily began to garner accloades from his peers and, soon after, he joined the Ray Charles Band for a year. He recorded his first single in 1957, "You Don't Treat Me Right", for the Cobra label under the direction of Willie Dixon after Dixon saw him playing with the Walter Johnson Orchestra. Eventually, he joined Guitar Slim's band and move to New Orleans, Louisiana. Slim inspired Shorty to incorporate more showmanship into his live performance style. Before long, Shorty was doing somersaults and flips on stage.

While in New Orleans, Shorty also fronted his own band which played regularly at the Dew Drop Inn where he was joined by special guests such as T-Bone Walker, Big Joe Turner and Little Richard. He is also well known as Jimmy Hendrix’s longtime mentor.

Bill Hearne’s Roundhouse Revue

Legally blind since birth, Bill took up the guitar when he was seven.  Largely musically self-taught, Bill developed a picking style he calls cross-picking.  "Since I didn't have people to play with, I developed a style that incorporated a percussion rhythm while playing lead riffs. Basically, I tried to be a one man band," he says.  Like fellow cross-pickers Tony Rice and Doc Watson, Bill is improvisational.  "I hardly ever play the same thing twice."  It's not something he thinks about, it simply happens, he adds. And what always happens when Bill lets it happen is just plain fun. Dallas born Hearne finds his way into a song's interior with a baritone as mellow as bourbon and smoky as a Texas pool hall and a picking style that satisfies both your feet and heart.  At its best, country music is elegiac, a meat and potatoes campfire poem about heartbreak and redemption.  It's about truth, the kind that hurts and the kind that heals

Joe West and Friends

Joe West has won the Santa Fe Reporter’s “Best Song Writer of 2008, 2009, and 2010". It seems that his strange folk/country tales of U.F.O.s, broken hearts and trailer park liberals enthrall audiences wherever he hangs his hat.

Paula Nelson was born on October 27th, 1969 in Houston TX. She drew early influences from singers like Jesse Colter and Rita Coolidge, whose bluesy, supple vocal style provided one of Paula’s earliest templates as she found her own voice. Texas Monthly has called that voice “torchy,” and the Los Angeles Times praised, “There’s no missing the unforced power of Paula’s singing.”

Her song “Pale Moon” from was picked up by Putamayo Records as the first track on their American Folk Album. In 2000 she moved to New Orleans. McNally toured extensively behind it from 2005-2007, doing national tours with a band and as a solo performer. Unable to return to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina Shannon settled into North Mississippi with her husband and daughter. Her newest project is called ‘Coldwater’. Also known as Mother Culture, the Brooklyn-based DJ/singer is back with another thoroughly conscious set of roots music that sparkles with witty verbosity and an acute sense of social reality.”
